NEARING RETIREMENT • SEEKING VOLUNTEERS

April 30, 2017

To Our Local Homeschool Community from Laura Young

As many of you know, I have been curating local homeschool news and listings of local homeschool organizations, along with a local homeschool events calendar, since 2006 with the mission of connecting Lynchburg area homeschool families to each other and to groups, organizations, activities, and other resources and information for enhancing their children’s home education.

My youngest child is in the process of wrapping up high school; and, as such, I am nearing retirement from home education.

I am seeking local individuals who are currently active in home education and who are interested in carrying forward the work of LynchburgHomeschool.com for the benefit of our local homeschool community.

Individuals need not have website or tech experience, but should possess a fondness for our local homeschool families and a desire to fulfill the stated mission of connecting Lynchburg area homeschool families to each other and to groups, organizations, activities, and other resources and information for enhancing their children’s home education.

I am able to maintain the website itself going forward; however, I will need others who actually gather local homeschool news and information, as listed below, and would manage certain aspects of the site’s social media entities.

  • Local Homeschool News
  • Local Homeschool Events Calendar
  • Local Homeschool Organizations Listing

Please be in touch if you are interested in volunteer opportunities to serve our local homeschool community in the Lynchburg, Virginia region.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

To:  Jamerson YMCA Homeschool Parents
From:  Traci Williams, HYPE Director
Re: Fall 2017-Spring 2018 HYPE Session

Greetings Homeschool Parents and Happy Summer!

I hope this letter finds you all enjoying your summer break!  Believe it or not, we are already in the planning stages for our upcoming Fall 2017-Spring 2018 HYPE Program.  Classes will begin on Monday, September 11, 2017 and will continue throughout the month of May 2018.  We will be taking the month of December off, as well as time for both Thanksgiving and Spring Break Holidays.

Available class days and times will be:  Mondays-Thursdays 9:30am-11:30am for ages 5-12.   If there is high demand for a Friday teen class we could potentially add that, but would need a minimum of 10 teens registered first.   This year we will have check-in/drop off and pick up in the Kidz Gym.  Parents will be able to drop children off in the Kidz Gym at 9:30am and should arrange pick up no later than 11:30am.  We will continue to offer both Health & Physical Education during the 2 hour periods, healthy snack days and swimming days, and we also plan to incorporate more community outreach projects!

In order to staff and maintain our program, we find it necessary to implement the following member fees for our 2017-2018 program:

$10.00/month per child for 2 days a week with a maximum cap of $25/month per family (if you have more than 2 children participating in the program)

$20.00/month per child for 4 days a week with a maximum cap of $50/month per family (if you have more than 2 children participating in the program)

For most months this will be equivalent to about $1.25 per day per child, and less than that if you have 3 or more children participating.  We are committed to making this program as cost-friendly to our member families as possible as we feel it is a great benefit to our Homeschoolers!

REGISTRATION BEGINS JULY 10, 2017

Open registration for the fall will begin on Monday, July 10, 2017, and if you register and pay for September by August 11th you’ll receive a free YMCA HYPE T-shirt for each child registered!  Additional T-shirts will be available to purchase after August 11th.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions at traciwilliams@ymcacva.org or you can call me at (434)-582-1900, extension # 209.  We are so excited for the fall and look forward to seeing all of you again soon!

Sincerely,
Traci Williams, HYPE Program Director, Jamerson Family YMCA

LOCAL HOMESCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAMS NOW FORMING

From local homeschool father, Bob Sanchez:

Ambassadors Football is currently forming independent Christian tackle football teams for homeschool and private school (without football team) boys currently (2016-17 academic year) in 7th-11th grade in the Roanoke-Lynchburg region. Play is scheduled to begin for the fall 2017 season. The program is Roanoke-based with teams currently forming in Roanoke and Lynchburg; boys will have a choice to play on either squad.

Games are scheduled, all positions are open, and the Christian environment will be much like the Central Virginia Disciples and Hampton Roads Generals (no religious requirement to participate). No prior experience necessary, just a desire to always play hard.

Families interested in playing or learning more about this opportunity should review the informational flyer & sign-up sheet here and complete the non-binding application and email to Adam McKelvey (Roanoke) here or Bob Sanchez (Lynchburg) here or mail to 27 Wyndermere Drive, Troutville, VA 24175. Contact Adam or Bob for further information and stay-tuned for details regarding organizational meetings, etc.

Update from Bob Sanchez dated July 14, 2017:

Hello Everyone,

We have recently achieved critical mass to the point where we have formed a separate team in Lynchburg called the Lynchburg Crusaders! We initially planned for our Lynchburg area boys to play as part of the Roanoke Ambassadors team that was starting up in Roanoke. However, the response to the concept has been tremendous to the point where teams have formed not only in Roanoke and Lynchburg but also in Rocky Mount, Christiansburg, and several cities in North Carolina. For all intents and purposes we have our own league.

We have secured a football field behind Leesville Elementary School on Leesville Rd. in Lynchburg to hold our practices and any home games we may schedule. Additionally, because of the generosity of many good people who have donated funds, we have been able to substantially reduce the cost to play person to $75! NO ONE WILL BE TURNED AWAY FOR LACK OF FUNDS.

Here is some vital information to pass along to anyone interested in playing. Please know that if someone is interested in playing they will need to signup as soon as possible as the number of spots on the roster is limited and is filling up.

  • Practice & Game field: Football field behind Leesville Elementary School, 25 Lewis Way, Lynchburg (Timberlake Lions football field)
  • Practice Times: Friday and Sunday, 3-5pm (time may adjust), starting August.
  • Cost to play: $75 per player. Fee covers helmet, shoulder pads, pants with padding, game jersey. Each player to provide his own football cleats and mouthpiece.
  • Head coach: Philip Harris (some additional assistant coaching positions available)

Dates to remember:

  • 11am, Saturday, July 29, 2017; Equipment distribution at the field for those boys who have officially signed up to play by that date and issued on a first come, first serve basis.
  • 3-5pm, Sunday, July 30, 2017; Non contact practice in helmets, cleats, T-shirt and short pants. Bring water!
  • August 12, 2017, 1st practice game. Bring water!

Sent as an attachment with this email is the original registration form which a player and parents can use to sign up. Please email all completed registration forms to me here. Informational flyer & sign-up sheet here.

We want to emphasize that this team is open to all boys regardless of whether they are homeschooled, attend private schools without football teams or a public school as long as they are comfortable playing in a Christian environment. Our coaches are all born again believers.

Thank-you and please pass along this information to any boy who will be in the 8th grade to 12th grade this Fall who wants to play tackle football. No experience necessary.

Thank-you and many blessings,
Bob Sanchez

Hello! My name is Kellie and I am the new Community Recreation Programmer for Lynchburg Parks and Recreation City-Wide programs. My focus is on youth, teens and family here in the area, and I wanted to reach out to you in an effort to build a stronger relationship with the many homeschoolers in the area. Did you know that rock climbing was just accepted into the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo?

Rock Climbing is a great physical and exhilarating workout but it also strengthens problem solving skills and teaches life lessons about perseverance, determination, and planning ahead. It is a unique sport in that it can be an individual endeavor where the climber tests themselves against different routes or problems that are on the wall – much like a golfer plays against the course; but it can also be competitive between climbers as a climber can compete as an individual or on a team against other individuals or teams for scores to make the sport competitive.

Rise Up Climbing has been in business since 2008 – and we are located at 1225 Church Street in Downtown Lynchburg – next to the YMCA and City Armory. We are open everyday of the week and cater to all ability levels and ages. Anyone 4 years and up can access our facility and climb for the day. We teach our intro to climbing (Basic Skills) class ON DEMAND anytime we are open in just 30 minutes! No appointments necessary.

RISE UP CLIMBING in Lynchburg will be offering HOMESCHOOL DAYS on the 4th Wednesday of each month from 1-5p. Homeschool Day pricing is $13/climber including rental gear (normally $19.00). Climb for as long as you like – you just have to show up between 1-5PM! We are open until 10PM that day – and you can leave and come back!

$20/initial belayer training for parents and students over 14 years-old if you’d like to access the 40′ wall. Parents and students over 14 years-old will learn to hold rope (known as belaying) for their climber in 30 minutes on the spot. After the initial training the belaying itself is free upon subsequent visits. Rental harness, if needed, is $2.50 – or you can always bring your own harness.

Anyone under 18 years-old will need a waiver filled out by their parent or legal guardian. Call Rise up at 434-845-7625 or email info@riseupclimbing.com for Homeschool Days pricing and further information. Our website is RiseUpClimbing.com – where you can find more information about our programs – and fill out a digital waiver (no printing required) ahead of time!

GOVERNMENT COURSE FOR 2017-18

Longtime local homeschool father and independent businessman, John Knaus, will again be offering a high school level U.S. Government course for the 2017-18 academic year to local homeschool students. The course will be held at his family’s home on Tuesdays from 1-2:30p beginning in late-August 2017 (30 weeks, $150 tuition) and will utilize Declaration Statesmanship curriculum by Ferrier and Seeley. Email John here or call 434-258-4573 for further details.

Declaration Statesmanship is a focused study of U.S. Government based on the principles within the Declaration of Independence. This is an unusual approach. The goal is to help students understand the rationale and background for the creation of the United States and our form of government. The course incorporates readings from primary sources, discussion, writing, and independent research.

The course is designed with three components: a student text, a teacher’s manual, and a Declaration Statesmanship Book of Readings. The text provides the background and context along with discussion questions, reading assignments, and writing assignments. The Book of Readings contains excerpts from books such as Nichomachean Ethics, The Federalist Papers, Democracy in America, and The Second Treatise of Civil Government, along with the entire text of or excerpts from a number of historic speeches and documents such as the Articles of Confederation, The U.S. Constitution, the transcript of the Dread Scott decision, the Gettysburg Address, and the sixth Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

The text is written from a Christian perspective common to all denominations, but it also teaches students about the concept of “natural law” that many non-Christians throughout history have recognized as a source of moral principles. It begins with “A Look Backward” to the formation of eighteenth century views about government and the rights of people. With that context in mind, students explore the Declaration of Independence and the rationale used by the colonists in their revolt against England. Quite a bit of time is dedicated to the principles involved since these underlie the rest of the course. Students study the influential ideas of that time period and the tensions between them that resulted in the eventual writing of our Constitution. Further study of the Constitution itself flows naturally from this foundation. Students learn the basics regarding our federal form of government in this course, but the focus is not so much on minutiae but rather on principles.

Curriculum reviews by Cathy Duffy here and Rainbow Resource here.

John Knaus is an Independent business man, homeschool dad of four amazing kids, husband of one remarkable woman, teacher of government, economics and Virginia History since 2008, Co-Director of City on a Hill Youth Theater. This course meets in the Knaus home at 213 Brooklawn Drive in Lynchburg.

This course is for everyone. Learning about the purpose and foundation of our government is a must. This teacher and curriculum is engaging and enjoyable. You won’t regret taking it!
