NEW GENEVA SUMMER ART WORKSHOPS

The New Geneva Education Center will be offering a variety of abbreviated art lessons on basic techniques from mid-May to mid-August. All classes will be conducted in the art studio at New Geneva Academy in downtown Appomattox, Virginia. Dates and times are subject to change and updates will be posted at NewGenevaEdu.com on their ‘Classes’ page. All materials are included in prices listed. Ages listed are only suggestions based on typical ability and interest level. Adjustments may be made. Private lessons are also available. HOMESCHOOL DAYS AT RISE UP CLIMBING

Rise Up Climbing in Lynchburg will be offering Homeschool Days on the 4th Wednesday of each month from 1-5p. Homeschool Day pricing is $10/climber including gear (normally $15.50) or $15/initial belayer training for parents and students over 14 years-old. Parents and students over 14 years-old will learn to hold rope (known as belaying) for their climber in 30 minutes on the spot. After the initial training the belaying itself is free upon subsequent visits. Rental harness, if needed, is $2. Anyone under 18 years-old will need a waiver filled out by their parent or legal guardian. LIBERTY UNIVERSITY HOMESCHOOL LIAISON

Liberty University’s Office of Admissions is pleased to announce the creation of a specific liaison for homeschool families. Phylicia Masonheimer, a homeschool and Liberty graduate, is now acting as Liberty’s Homeschool Coordinator. She is available for admissions, dual enrollment, and transfer questions and can be contacted for one-on-one visits or to schedule a visit with your co-op or group. CLASSICAL CONVERSATIONS 3-DAY PARENT PRACTICUM

Classical Conversations will be offering their 3-Day Practicum for parents July 13-15, 2015 from 9a-4p at Thomas Terrace Baptist Church. USED CURRICULUM TRUNK SALE

Peaksview Christian Home Educators will be hosting their Used Curriculum Trunk Sale on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 from 10a-2p at the Bedford Church of God at 1212 East Main Street in Bedford. Rain date will be July 20th at same time and location. The sale is open to all homeschool families. Sellers, contact Mandie Grohs via email here by July 10th to reserve your spot. Seller cost is $5 per spot. Set up from your trunk or set up a table near your vehicle spot.

Patriots Cheerleading, New for 2015-16

Patriots Cross-Country Summer Practice & Camp

The Lynchburg Patriot Pacers are already running this summer! XC Camp will be from July 27-31, 2015. Fees for the camp are $50 but will be waived if you register and pay for the XC season prior to the camp. Fees for XC players for the season are $110/player. Online registration herebut running with the team this summer is FREE!

Patriots Girls Volleyball MS-Varsity Practices & 4th-6th Developmental Team

Girls Volleyball practices for Middle School through Varsity levels start August 4, 2015. Per player fees for MS and JV/varsity players will be $150/player (annual family membership at $50/year per family is a prerequisite). LHSAA will also have a developmental volleyball team for 4th through 6th grade players. Practices for the developmental team will start on August 24, 2015 and be on Mondays from 3:30 to 5 pm at HHBC. The developmental team fee will be $50/player (family membership NOT required for developmental team participation). Players that are not sure of their playing ability should initially come to the middle school practices to practice with the team and get direction from the coaches. Online registration here.

PSAT/SAT PREPARATION COURSES

Mary Prentice, local home educator and Liberty University professor, is offering a PSAT/SAT preparation courses to help students prepare for vocabulary, reading, writing, and math skills to improve their chances of doing well. The course is 16 weeks of one-hour Friday classes from 11:45a-12:45p at Mary’s home in Lynchburg. The course runs August 7, 2015 through November 20, 2015. The 16-week cost is $80 for tuition, plus students need to purchase a few resources to aid in the studying and mastery. A $20 deposit is necessary to hold student spot and tuition may be paid in $20 installments. Email Mary Prentice, PhD, MSLS here for registration. HOMESCHOOL FIRST OPEN HOUSE

Homeschool First invites you to their Come & Go Open House event on Saturday, August 8, 2015 from 10a-2p at Fort Hill United Methodist Church in Lynchburg. Families will be able to meet Homeschool First administration to learn more about the co-op, speak with teachers about classes and curricula, play a game that will walk them through a tour of the facility, and of course, families will be able to join Homeschool First that day as well. This is a ‘come and go’ event and families are encouraged to come and go as it is convenient for them. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Visit HomeschoolFirst.org here to learn more.

Homeschool First is a new support group for local families who have chosen to educate their children at home. Homeschool First’s mission is to provide support for families with children in grades K-12 by providing practical educational opportunities and support for parents in their home school endeavors. Homeschool First is an inclusive group who invite and respect members of any beliefs, religions, and walks of life. 4 DAYS OF IEW EVENTS IN LYNCHBURG WITH ANDREW PUDEWA

Andrew Pudewa, founder, principal speaker, and director of the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW), will be presenting teacher and student workshops, and a free evening event for families. Various events will be held over the course of four days, August 12-15, 2015 at Grace Evangelical Free Church on Timberlake Road in Lynchburg. 

August 12-13- Teaching Writing: Structure and Style
August 13- Nurturing Competent Communicators (FREE Event) *Come early for coffee and Q&A time with Andrew Pudewa.
August 14- Student Workshops (Beginner and Advanced)
August 15- Student Workshops (Advanced)


GOVERNMENT & CURRENT EVENTS COURSE for 2015-16

Veteran homeschool father and local businessman, John Knaus, will be offering a Government & Current Events course for the 2015-16 academic year for 30 weeks beginning August 27, 2015. The course will be taught on Thursdays from 1-2:30p at the Knaus family home in Lynchburg near Timberlake and Waterlick Roads. Class Description: The text we will use is Story of the Constitution, Second Edition, by Liberty Press. Chapter titles are as follows: The Colonial Experience, The Struggle for American Independence, A New Nation, Change is Needed, An Historic Assembly, A Bundle of Compromises,, The Ratification Struggle, Preamble and Aritcle I, Article II, Article III-VI, The Bill of Rights, The Early Amendments, Twentieth-Century Amendments, Five Principles of the Constitution. The book contains further material on the Constitution and the Founding Fathers. Tests will be take home.

A current subscription of World Magazine (hard copy or online) will be required to cover the Current Affairs section of the class. We will discuss much surrounding our current government affairs, world government affairs, and the purpose surrounding our original constitution.

Teacher Bio: BA, MA, Father of four kids homeschooled through high school. Past owner and operator of Franchises. Currently managing food service contracts with CVCC and Lynchburg College. Drama Director for City on a Hill Youth Theater (see fb). Teacher through the homeschool community in the subjects of Government, Economics, Current Affairs, and VA History for the past 6 years.

Charlotte Mason Homeschool (Lynchburg, VA area) is a Facebook group to connect Lynchburg area home educators who use Charlotte Mason’s methods and style in the education of their children and for those who are interested in learning more about CM methods, style, and philosophy. This group is for families living in Lynchburg, Virginia and Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell counties.
